You cannot find a single ancient mystery in which there is no dancing

Dancing with the Huddlers

Dancing on the labyrinth in the church of St Michael and All Angels in Abingdon was wonderful -  such a beautiful, sacred space to dance in! The Huddlers were invited to lead the first dancing on the new labyrinth in 2009 and were invited back again in 2010, the day I danced with them.

It was the first time I had been to a dancing day led by a small group  rather than an individual. Four of the Huddlers, Cyd, Lesley, Sally and Sue each led different periods of dancing during the day. Mary Williams, the teacher who started the CD group there after the Huddlers’  2009 day, led us into the labyrinth to the music of Sougan and then Cyd opened the day’s dancing with dances we knew.  Then we danced some of the Huddlers’ own choreographies,  completely new to us, to pieces of lovely and wonderfully varied music. We danced to Miriam Makeba, Lucinda Belle, Amy Grant, Souad Massi, James Brown, Era, Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris amongst others.  We loved Sue’s lyrical ‘Abingdon Waltz’ and earthy ‘Pata Pata’, Lesley’s  meditative Ave Manu and country-flavoured ‘Ruby Shoes’, Sally’s ‘Lady Labyrinth’ with its spiral and ‘So She Dances’ with its free waltzing section. Some dances we did in two circles, one within the other, and the feeling of all moving together was magical.  I, and other teachers there, took dances home to teach to our own groups.  A great day – if you get the chance to dance with the Huddlers, with their different personalities and styles, and lovely choreographies, grab it! They are doing a weekend in Surrey in July and have a good website www.huddlers.btck.co.uk
